Praying Without Ceasing

1 Thessalonians 5:17 says we are to pray without ceasing.  This scripture speaks more about the posture of the heart towards prayer rather than a more formalized time of prayer.  One’s heart should be consistently involved in prayer throughout the day – staying in touch with God.

Praying without ceasing can also mean that one is praying for direction, guidance or strategy in specific situations or circumstances.  Pray for the first step and then take that step.  Pray for the second step and then that that step – so forth and so on – until you’ve accomplished that for which you were seeking God, trusting that He is leading every step of the way.

I am a person who prays for about twenty minutes at any one given time.  I used to feel bad about the length of time I prayed.  I have heard a lot of people, some of them my colleagues in the gospel, saying they pray for forty-five minutes or an hour.  Whew!   I've rarely done that!   So, I thought something was wrong with me and that I wasn't giving God the right amount of time in prayer.  However, I was vindicated by the great Smith Wigglesworth.  For those of you who are not familiar with this Christian giant, he evangelized around the turn of the 20th century.  He was an awesome and powerful man of God who ministered profoundly in the area of healing.  This brother even raised the dead.  Study his life.  It will enrich yours.

Anyway, someone asked Brother Wigglesworth how often he prayed.  His response was, "twenty minutes".  "Twenty minutes?” they exclaimed.  "Yes", said Smith, "because during the course of the day, there is not a twenty minute period of time that passes without me saying something to the Lord.  So when it’s time for formal prayer, I don't have too much left to say!"  That story blessed my soul, because during the course of the day, I am always saying something to the Lord.   I believe we sow the seeds of intimacy in our "formal" prayer time.  But, the thing that strengthens that intimacy is the constant communication with God throughout the day.

That is why we must stay in touch with our God and Father and the reason we should pray without ceasing.

Will you commit to increasing your communication with God through prayer?  Seek the face of God, the heart of God, and strengthen your relationship with Him through the marvelous gift of prayer!
