Happy 4th Everyone! Usually I post on Tuesday but since I'm currently in Philly enjoying family I thought it best to post today.
I will be the first to tell you I get super excited when we're about to travel to Philly. Trust me it has grown me! Ha! My husband is from these North Philly streets so now it's a must we come visit often.
We love the hustle and bustle of downtown and hitting the blocks where a few of my favorite stores are aligned: Boyds, BCBG, and InterMix.
With our much needed get away, I've realized things have changed so much in our world. Where we wouldn't have a care in the world, now we have to be more mindful, watchful, and on guard in public places. I was never this type of person.
I was raised in a small country town of about 1400 people. We slept with our doors unlocked, keys still in the ignition of our cars overnight, and just a much slower pace of life. We had to create our fun. I spent a lot of days arguing with my little brother, because lets face it, he was the face I had to see EVERYDAY! Ha! A girl was getting bored at times with her surroundings, but those country days are something I can appreciate for sure.
When I met my husband, he changed the game for me. When we go to public places, he never sits with his back facing the entrance doors and he's always aware of his surroundings. Growing up in North Philly his environment shaped this awareness. Now, I do the same. Unfortunately, these days you have to.
With that said, now when we travel I get a little anxiety. It's a natural feeling I get because of the unwanted, unnecessary terror going on in our US soil lately. It can truly happen anywhere, because the hearts of some men are so wicked!
I'm constantly praying for our protection. I must admit, at times I pray out of fear, but I realize fear and trust cannot exist in the same place. So it helps me to dig deeper and get in my place secret place with God. By doing so, He always gives me the comfort and assurance I need... He is with us. As I pray, I always meditate on this passage of scripture. I've had it committed to memory since I was in my early twenties. I'm so glad I did, because it comes to mind often:
Safety of Abiding in the Presence of God
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.”
Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler
And from the perilous pestilence.
He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
And ten thousand at your right hand;
But it shall not come near you.
Only with your eyes shall you look,
And see the reward of the wicked.
Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place,
No evil shall befall you,
Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;
For He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you in all your ways.
In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,
The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.
“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will deliver him and honor him.
With long life I will satisfy him,
And show him My salvation.”
I emphasized my favorite parts of the scripture. I was first introduced to this passage of scripture by my Grandmother. She always required my little brother and I read it before we went to High School every morning. I didn't realize why then, but now I know. It's a scripture that reminds us of the protection and safety of God.
It's a scripture I quote out load when I'm rocking Kori to sleep at night. I want it to penetrate her spirit so when she's at an age when she becomes more aware of her surroundings, she can bring that to the forefront of her mind when she's walking in the face of dangers unseen.
Friends, our times have changed. Continue to pray for protection over your family and loved ones. Continue to walk in the peace of God resting upon you. Continue to know He encamps His angels around you. Don't allow the terrors of the world to keep you from living the abundant life, but always STAY WOKE!
"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world."
(1 Peter 5: 8,9, NKJV)
