The Challenge of CHANGE

Scripture Reference: For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. -Romans 1:17 (KJV)

For some of us, the need to try something new or to perhaps change the way a task is being performed, is often realized, but rarely actualized. Many times, we may feel the need to break out of the mold, but somehow we just never manage to do so. Change can be difficult, but in many instances, it is also necessary, especially if we’re looking to excel or achieve the greater good in a situation.

Generally, the reason change is avoided is because we see failure and/or pain as an obstacle to overcome if the change is made. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is our rationale for avoiding change. Implementing new and challenging ideas, programs or projects should be viewed as exciting and as an opportunity to make improvements in existing institutions. Implementing change may cause circumstances to be altered in a way that more precisely benefits or enhances the lives of others or even opens avenues that birth opportunities for even greater growth and rewards.

Never be deterred from taking on a task simply because of the degree of difficulty associated with it. The daughters of Zelophehad undertook a task that had never been attempted before – changing the laws of inheritance in the nation of Israel. In those times, sons were allowed to inherit their fathers land but daughters were not. Daughters were generally provided for via dowry, most of which was expected to come from the potential son-in-law. A dowry could consist of clothing, jewelry, money, furniture and the like. But, a daughter could not inherit her father’s wealth – land, herds or money.

One could only imagine the furor that was created around this request, making it anything but easy. Women held a very narrow space and were not considered to be on the same level as men back in those times. Undoubtedly, there were some men who were outraged by the request made by these women; perhaps they had to endure ridicule and scorn because of their stance, but stand they did!

When these women appealed to Moses, he went straight to God with the matter. God’s response to Moses was that the women were right. Since their father had no sons, they should indeed inherit their father’s estate. Moreover, because of their courage, they changed the laws governing inheritance for the whole nation of Israel!

Taking on new challenges should be a way of life. We should not be intimidated by the obstacles we may face because we, like the daughters of Zelophehad, have the privilege of appealing to God to bring our vision into manifestation. Proceed.
