My Special THREE - A Mother’s Day Tribute

I would be remiss if I didn’t take the time to honor some amazing women who have shaped my life tremendously. They have all revolutionized my perception about God, myself, and others.

We have been taught to, "Honor your father and mother"--which is the first commandment with a promise--"so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth." (Ephesians 6: 2, 3)

The word honor means to obey. Obeying parents who are followers of Christ can prolong your life because it adds wisdom to your growth and development as a child. But what happens when you were not as fortunate to have parents who might not have followed the Lord to steer you in the right direction? God will provide you with divine, godly mothers and mentors who will be great examples of truth, character, and trust.

First, My "Mommy," Estelita Tarver.

In short, Mommy has sacrificed a lot for her children to “make it” to America. She left her familiar country (Philippines), people, and culture to end up in small, country town in East Texas (Naples, TX) which was a completely different environment. She had to learn to “fit in” to a people who didn’t look like her and blend into an unfamiliar culture with her “mixed race” babies.

Today I want to recognize my mom’s resilience. She’s been through so much in her lifetime. Though we have had some hardships in our relationship it never discredited her role as my loving mother. She has such a sweet spirit, always willing to give her last. Might I add she’s one HECK of a "Lola" (In Tagalog meaning "Grandmother") not only to our sweet Kori, but her other grandchildren. Mom has taught me how to serve a spouse, forgiveness, and has deposited strength in me I didn’t know I possessed until I had to make those withdrawals during many seasons of life. Mommy, thank you.

This is my "Granny," Hazel Porter. She is the backbone of my family. Her strength is uncanny. She experienced the loss of a husband at a very early age as well and was left to raise five children during that time. She remarried twice adding four more children to her family. My Granny not only possessed the strength to raise her own, but she has been gifted to raise many extending to nephews, nieces, grandchildren, great-grand children, and other children in the community. She will stop at nothing to care for those who need it most. At one point I was one of them. She taught me how to love God through worship in songs and prayer. Through our relationship and bond she has also taught me to have a heart of compassion for others. She has strengthened my resilience to navigate through the toughest times in life. Granny, thank you.

This is my "Nanny Jewell," Terrie J. Thomas. How fitting is "Jewell" for a middle name because she truly embodies this. She is the heart and soul of a giver. When I met her, I was going through such a tough time with grief. One thing about Terrie she is so in tuned with the spirit of God. Her discernment has always been spot on! Getting to know her I prayed for God to develop my character to reflect hers. Why did I pray that? I went through the fire after that prayer! God knew what He was doing. He exposed me to someone who I would need to help further develop me in my spiritual gifts, compassion, and resilience. She is my Naomi. She literally helped prepare me for my Boaz, Brian. She has taught me to live God’s word in wisdom, gentleness, and truth. Nanny, thank you.

I can go on and on about these three special women in my life. They have not only made me a better woman, but has prepared me to be an amazing mom to my gifts of life.

What’s amazing is God has sent and continues to send other beautiful mothers in my life who are my best friends and sisters! You know who you are if you’re reading this. I just want to say thank you for making sure I remain authentic and true to who God created me to be! You all make me better!

To my sisters who are guardians, godmothers, or future moms, you inspire me too! Though I have written this tribute to my very special THREE, you too are special to me! With that being said….

Happy Early Mother’s Day to My Special THREE and ALL Fabulous Mothers (women who serve in a nurturing role) who are resilient, forgiving, compassionate, wise, gentle, and living in truth! You make the world better because of who you are! And might I add every bit of who you are…is enough!

I celebrate YOU!
