Happy F.A.B. (Fashion & Beauty) Friday!
It's time to ReDefine REAL BEAUTY with Mrs. Vonna Matthews. Her sweet spirit and genuine humility in Christ is not only beautiful but evident. She has a passion for moms, entrepreneurs, event planning, business, her family, and God.
I met her a couple of years ago at one of my first speaking engagements in Dallas, TX. I will never forget she walked up to me, introduced herself, and gave me some information for her upcoming event. She gave me the biggest smile with her gorgeous deep dimples! I was immediately drawn to her spirit. I was also intrigued by her company's name, Bottles, Bibs, and Pumps because I had recently gave birth to Kori (my daughter). I was oh so familiar with bottles, bibs, and definitely loved my pumps! LOL How could I not attend!? Besides, I had never heard of the term "Mompreneur" before so that too peaked my interests.
I attended the event and was immediately blown away at the amount of resources Vonna had readily available for Mompreneurs and it was her first event (you'll find out more about it in the interview)! It was a really awesome experience!
We met up another time when she was pregnant with her second beautiful daughter and we remained in touch. When she reached out to me again with a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with her and other amazing Moms in the city, I mean how could I resist?
Vonna is the epitome of professionalism and a great example of a "Mompreneur." You will discover in this exclusive interview where she gains her strength to accomplish so much, while finding balance to maintain her beautiful family. You will be blessed by it, I certainly was! Enjoy!
Dr. E: Please tell everyone who Vonna Matthews is?
Vonna: I could write a laundry list of all the titles and adjectives that describe me, but I will keep it simple. I am a woman of God, a daughter of the King. In Him, I fulfill my roles as a wife, mother, daughter, friend, entrepreneur and visionary. I live my purpose through creating new things whether it is businesses, publications or organizations. My passion lies in turning nothing into something amazing.
Dr. E: I love that! THAT you are Vonna! So what are some of your major accomplishments?
Vonna: Some of my major accomplishments professionally have been starting my business, V Events, in 2007, hosting my first conference and starting the new magazine CEOMOM. What makes these great accomplishments for me is they were true tests of my faith. I had to learn to trust God on higher levels.
Dr. E: That is beautiful! I love how you tie in your accomplishments with a "test" first. Amazing! Tell us about your company and why did you decide to create it?
Vonna: I started V Events in 2007, because I love to plan events. Working in corporate America as an event planner always limited the types of events I could do. I wanted to expand beyond events that focused on one company to have a bigger reach within the community. I started Bottles, Bibs & Pumps, a lifestyle brand for mompreneurs, because I wanted to create a community of women who understood the challenges of balancing entrepreneurship with motherhood. We aim to be a resource hub for all things business and mommy.
Dr.E: You do a great job of providing those resources too Vonna! Now I was at your very first event a couple of years ago and it was incredible! I couldn't believe it was your first one! What gave you the courage to step out and do it?
Vonna: Thank you! The event was called Bottles, Bibs & Pumps Conference & Expo. Faith in God and being just a little bit crazy are the reasons I had a successful event. I believe that being an entrepreneur requires a whole lot of faith and just the right amount of insanity.
Vonna pictured with her family. She is holding Zara (1 year old ) & her husband Marcus is holding Zoe (3 years old).
Dr. E: That's the truth! Faith and some insanity are great ingredients for God to work with! LOL Now, being a mom of 2 and a wonderful husband I'm sure:), how have you been able to balance it all?
Vonna: Having a husband that works with and supports me has been a huge factor in my success. We work together as a team to manage our household. One thing we've learned (and are still working on) is to play on each other's strengths. Another way I balance is by accepting my limitations. That is hard for me, because I am a perfectionist by nature. I've had to learn to do what I can and let go of the rest. Trusting God to complete in me and through me what I need is how I embrace my humanity.
Dr. E: That's great advice too Vonna. Yes, partnership is always important to maintain the household as you're pursuing your purpose. I will say the role of a Mom exudes "real beauty" so how would you define REAL BEAUTY?
Vonna: I believe real beauty is intangible. It is something that others experience through you. It's how you treat people. It's humility. It's respecting and embracing your purpose. It's living a life of impact. It's confidence in God. I could go on for days on true beauty. The bottom line is if you can only see it, it's true value can not be perceived. Only when you feel beauty is it real.
Dr. E: I love how you define it as beyond inner but action in how you treat others. Beautiful! Vonna, have you ever struggled with your inner beauty? If yes, how did you overcome it to embrace your real beauty?
Vonna: I've struggled with my inner beauty when I have focused on my flaws, giving them more power than they deserve. I overcome by remembering and reflecting on God's grace and love for me. It's not that I shouldn't pay attention to my flaws and work on self-growth, it's that God sees me differently than I see myself. He sees what I can become.
Dr. E: That's amazing! Our focus is our everything right? Have you ever encountered other Moms who have often struggled with their inner beauty? If yes, what advice did you share with them to help in their struggles?
Vonna: I've encountered other women in general who struggle with inner beauty. Women often put a lot of pressure on themselves to do it all whether they have children or not. We are harder on ourselves than men. I advise them to embrace God's grace. It is a powerful thing. Only then can you experience truly loving yourself which is where real beauty starts.
Dr. E: So true. God's grace covers what we cannot. I love that! As a mom who exudes beauty, what do you and your husband teach your daughters to help them define beauty?
Vonna: Thank you! My daughters are 3 and 1. We live in a very narcissistic society so I am teaching them to be more than cute. I am very intentional about cultivating a thirst for knowledge in them, as well as a hunger for Christ. We do activities that encourage a love for the arts, nature and and God . I believe it's what we do more than what we say that will impact their views on beauty.
Dr. E: Very true! Cultivating them through our actions is so important these days. Thank you for sharing that. Now, tell us about your Faith in God. What does it mean to you in you line of work?
Vonna: My faith in God means everything to me not only in work, but in life. I am a shy and reserved person. My personality, skill set and resources do not always fit the task or venture that I am undertaking. I am required to meet new people which I enjoy, but often intimidates me. I have to lean on God to supply what I lack. I also have to trust Him when He leads me in uncharted territories which is quite often.
Dr. E: What a true testament of leaning on God through your personality. I think it's important to know how God created you so you can lean on him where you may lack. Well said Vonna! As an entrepreneur, mom, and wife what is the one question you seem to get asked often?
Vonna: "How do you do it all?" My simple answer is, "I don't." My family is always my number one priority. Everything else I conquer in seasons or stages.
Dr. E: Great answer! I need to pocket that one for myself! LOL So what advice would you give to our beautiful women desiring to become a business owner who has a family?
You: Start today! Write down a plan of action that includes the specifics of your goals. Everyone's beginning looks different so figure out what would be the best starting point for you. It may be research. It may be going to networking events to meet other entrepreneurs. It may be having a family meeting. Either way, don't wait until tomorrow.
Dr. E: Great response! Okay so Vonna, what do you like to do for fun?
Vonna: This may sound crazy, but fun for me means a day of having absolutely nothing to do. I don't get those days often, but when I do, they are heaven on earth. I love to cook and eat. I especially enjoy baking. I also love family activities. I love family events like park days, festivals and museums. Kids always help you to see things differently. They give you a chance to rediscover the world.
Dr. E: I hear you and absolutely concur! Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
Vonna: Thank you so much for this opportunity to be featured on A New Me. It is a privilege.
Dr. E: Vonna of course! You're amazing lady! Also I want to say thank you for the opportunity for allowing me and two other dynamic women to grace the cover of your CEOMOM Magazine! I cannot tell you how excited I am about it! I can't wait for the Launch on April 21st. Can you tell us more about the event?
Vonna: You are welcome! It is my honor. You ladies are dynamic and people need to hear your stories. The CEOMOM Summit focuses on engaging and interactive conversations related to business and motherhood. We will be talking about collaboration among women, turning an idea into a business, finding your power beyond motherhood and more. Dr. E: Thank you Vonna! Truly you are amazing. God's fingerprints are all over your life! What else can we expect to see from you in 2016?
Vonna: You can expect to see more events from Bottles, Bibs and Pumps. We are super excited about a mommy beauty event we are planning. You can also expect more great interviews and content from our CEOMOM magazine as well as a website for the magazine.
