Faith, Love, & REAL Beauty - A Valentine's Special Edition

Hello Beauties! Welcome to the FaithLoveBeauty contributing blog for F.A.B. (Fashion and Beauty) Fridays!  I am so excited to be a part of this new journey with Dr. Estrelita Bruce, who has been my spiritual mentor and a big sister to me for over 10 years.  Fashion and Beauty has been a passion of mine for most of my life, dating back to when I was a little girl. I have always been infatuated with my mother’s makeup bag and even sneaking a little on for school pictures in middle school.

When Dr. E asked me to be involved with “A NEW ME: Transparently Abundantly,” I knew it was God ordained.  Not only had I been looking to do something fresh with FaithLoveBeauty, but it also fulfilled a strong desire of mine to be able to discuss beauty and fashion in a redefined manner to many women of various ages and backgrounds.  To elaborate further, I must discuss a major beauty standard that I have set for myself through this blog that I would love to share with you.

We currently live in a world and society where beauty is a very misunderstood characteristic. Beauty has been defined by the very traits that we have been told are fleeting, such as height, weight, body figure, skin complexion, hair length, eye color, and a multitude of other physical attributes.  So many women question their beauty if they do not possess a certain trait that is “popular” at the moment. Likewise, they silently envy the beauty of other women having a particular trait they wish they had.

I recall a number of years where I was extremely insecure about being an African-American woman of deeper complexion simply because for some time society told the lie that my complexion may not be as beautiful as other complexions.  If only I had known then what I know now, which is how beauty is REALLY defined.

Let's look into 1 Peter 3: 3-4, which reads,“Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”

While the content of this scripture comes from text that is discussing Godly wife characteristics, I believe it sets a major beauty standard that is imperative for all women to live by today.  Peter tells us that it is understood women might have and enjoy outward adornment, such as great hair, nice jewelry, a great wardrobe, (flawless makeup - in which I will discuss often in future blog contributions), and this is okay!

However, what is not okay is for us to define our beauty or our worth in those things.  Our beauty is found in our inner self, the traits of our character that make us who we are… in the “unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit which is of great worth in His sight.”

How powerful it is that the character and condition of our inner soul and spirit is what makes us beautiful. Best of all, it is unfading unlike the other temporal adornments previously mentioned, AND is of great worth in God’s sight.  Our beauty and our worth come from characteristics we internally possess; and there is nothing we can do externally to make us more beautiful than who we are internally.

I am grateful to God that that He spoke through Peter to take that pressure off of us!  While it is okay to look beautiful outwardly, always ensure that your heart, soul, and spirit are also just as beautiful inwardly.  It is in this, the Lord finds beauty and value.  We can never be more beautiful on the exterior than we are internally in Him.

Now we have set our beauty standard and have Redefined REAL Beauty, on to the fun stuff! ☺  Valentine’s Day is around the corner, so I would like to bring you a Valentine’s Beauty Edition of FaithLoveBeauty.  It’s usually assumed that you have to have a significant other to thoroughly enjoy Valentine’s Day, but that is not true.  Valentine’s Day can also be fun with a group of your best girlfriends! No matter with whom you chose to celebrate the day, there are a few beauty and fashion trends necessary for the holiday.

A Signature Smell: You can’t go out on Valentine’s Day without a smell that trails you when you walk by!  I suggest the new Tory Burch ABSOLU perfume.  This scent is a fresh and modern update to her original scent that is perfect for nighttime.  The fragrance has scents of sandlewood, black currant, lily of the valley, and vanilla, among others. The fragrance is sold for about $100 (1.7 oz bottle), but a little goes a long way and it will last you for a long time.  Most importantly, this scent will last during your entire Valentine’s night date or get together with the girls. Lashes that "Wow": Valentine’s Day is a fun time to add a little extra glam to the lashes.  Choose between a natural look such as the Ardell Natural Black 110 lashes, or a more dramatic look such as the Ardell Double Up Black 204 lashes.  This lash brand can be found at all major drug stores, as well as Ulta, Target, and Walmart and range between $3-7 dollars. Oh! BUT don’t forget your Duo eyelash glue and to bat those eyes the entire night! [Can be purchased at: www.target.com]

A Lip Color that Pops: Valentine’s day is the perfect to wear a matte, rich color on the lips.  I absolutely love the matte lipstick formula from Dose of Colors and Coloured Rain Cosmetics. Choose from shades such as a velvety red like Cherry Blossom, a deep fuschia like Berry Me, or a deep vamp color such as Roulette (pictured above top to bottom). Either color is sure to complete your makeup for the night! Lip colors can be found on the websites and are around $18 each.  (Tip:  If you find matte lip colors drying, apply a very thin layer of lip balm, such as Carmex or EOS, prior to applying the lip color).  [Photo credit: www.colouredraine.com | Can be purchased at: www.doseofcolors.com

Neck Candy: A statement necklace is great year around, but especially on Valentine’s Day to add a fashion statement.  Go for something that will stand out against your outfit, like a gold necklace with dagger-like pendants or a silver necklace that screams drama. Both necklaces shown are currently sold at H&M and under $20 each! [Can be purchased at: www.hm.com

Handbag Game: Finally, handbags are known to complete an outfit.  No matter if you dressing up or staying casual for this holiday, an edgy clutch such as the Luvian from Aldo is sure to add a fashionable pop to your look. It also comes with a chain so you can wear it on the shoulder to give your hands a rest.  Best of all, it’s currently on sale for $16.98 online at Aldo! [Can be purchased at: www.aldoshoes.com]

Well, there you have it ladies!  Here is to being both a fashionista and a beauty (or F.A.B:) in God's eyes for Valentine’s Day!  Until next time, much Faith, Love, and REAL beauty to you!
